RIP: Etta James & Sarah Burke
Etta James 1938 - 2012 Sarah Burke 1982 -2012 While both are very tragic deaths at different ends of the spectrum, they both leave lasting legacies that have made a huge impact not only for their respective communities, but for the overall progress for women as well.

Why sports can use more athletes like Tim Tebow... →
Good role models are underappreciated and are a dying breed these days. In a world where self-promotion, obnoxious behaviour and extravagance is glorified and perpetrated in the media, it’s refreshing to know that there are still some athletes who are willing to take on the challenge of trying to be positive role models and doing the right thing. Tebow and Pacquiao are often maligned...

Deadly parasite turns honeybees into zombie slaves San Francisco biologists have made a macabre discovery that might help explain the mysterious crash of honeybee populations: parasites that turn bees into zombies. Infected bees go mad, abandoning their hive in a suicidal rush toward bright lights, according to a new study by San Francisco State researchers. “It’s the...

DJ Big Jacks Seasoned Greetings →
Last weekend I passed by the lovely Aritzia in SF, and asked about the Christmas music they were playing while I was perusing around. Turns out they collaborate with a lot of DJs and make some of the sickest mixtapes, free and downloadable from their site and through SoundCloud! This one, by DJ Big Jacks, is probably the best Holiday mixtape I’ve come across. Download and ingest, now. ...

Chris Ziegler: Where does the 'basic human right'... →
chrisziegler: When Twitter made sweeping changes this week — changes that I find largely unhelpful, and in some cases, counterproductive — it really drove home for me that a service I consider to be a fundamental part of my day-to-day internet activity is a privately-offered venture, accountable to no one… Insightful post about the power and potential of the internet not just as a “basic...

Giggity. Alas, the 8-minute extended trailer for the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is embeddable. After many initial attempts of reading this book in the past, I finally finished it in just a matter of a few days (grazie unemployment), and watched the Swedish film soon thereafter. The darkness of the story is really only justified through the novel itself, and much more than any film could ever...

Wanted: Olloclip, A 3-in-1 Lens For The iPhone →
“The iPhone takes 8-megapixel pictures. For anyone who snapped pictures with an early digital camera, that’s an astounding leap in quality. And yet, forgetting that just a few years ago smartphones didn’t even have a photo option, we want the iPhone camera to do everything short of talk to us. (Or maybe we do want it to talk to us—let’s ask Siri.). Fortunately, a pair of...

San Francisco to be first city in U.S. to set... →
loveyourchaos: engagedelectorate: Thanks to a 60% voter approval rate, SF passed  Proposition L in 2003. This provision requires that the city enforce an increase in the minimum wage every year that correlates with inflation.  That means, if you want to get down to dollars and cents, that this New Year’s Day,  SF’s hourly minimum wage will rise from $9.92 to $10.24 It should be required that...

Amazing. poptech: Congratulations to UCLA professor Aydogan Ozcan (PopTech 2009) named one of the top mobile health innovators of 2011 by the mHealth Alliance and Rockefeller Foundation. Ozcan has discovered how to convert cellphones in microscopes by relying on shadow imaging instead of expensive optics. In time, the ability to conduct tests and detect infectious diseases by leveraging mobile...

It’s very sobering, that the grief of the unexpected and tragic puts life into perspective. Even from a bird’s eye view. Appreciate what you have, who you have, and give back. The warmth of simply knowing you’re not alone is strong enough to last an eternity.
